Sullivan Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band
The Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band is the most visible instrumental music ensemble at Sullivan High School. Membership is only open to students enrolled in Symphonic Band. The ensemble performs at all home football games as well as playoff games. Additionally, this band serves as a flagship for Sullivan High School in all parades. The primary focus of this band is to teach music and entertain audience members while marching to drill.
In addition to the pep band music the band performs to support the football team, it is also involved in competitions. Students prepare drill set to music that they begin working on in early July for 4-8 hours a day. These competitions allow the students to travel all over eastern Missouri to perform for other school and listen to other schools performances. As representatives of Sullivan High School, students in this band are expected to be of the upmost character.
The Symphonic Band consists of the finest instrumental musicians at Sullivan High School. Students audition for placement in this organization following the fall marching band season. All members of this band are involved in the Screamin’ Eagle Marching Band. The Symphonic Band performs a variety of music including symphonies, orchestral transcriptions, traditional marches, movie soundtrack and Broadway selections as well as newly composed music.
Students who are selected to perform in this group are very dedicated and have reached a high level of musical achievement through individual work and previous study in the middle school bands. They are also expected to be of the highest level of character. The highest level of commitment and performance standard is expected of this organization. Many of the members of this ensemble will become members of the East Central All-District Band and the Four-Rivers Conference Band. Most of the members of Symphonic Band are involved in solo/small ensemble work during District and State Music Festival time in the spring.
The Sullivan Jazz Ensemble is a before-school, extra-curricular ensemble in which many students at Sullivan High School may become involved. Auditions for Sullivan Jazz are held at the end of the marching season with rehearsals beginning in late November. The group primarily rehearses on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7am.
The goal of the Sullivan Jazz Ensemble is to teach group dynamics, equal importance of every person of the ensemble, and the education of jazz traditions. The performing focus of the band is audience centered, resulting in a variety of styles from traditional big band charts to recent popular music being represented in the folder. In accordance with the philosophy, the music is selected first and foremost to be educational for the students while being enjoyed by a wide variety of people.
The Sullivan Color Guard unit is a vital portion of the Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band. It is a real thrill for these students to perform with the Screamin‘ Eagles to a live audience and a hundred yard stage. The guard participates in every aspect of the marching band season. Auditions for Color guard take place in May of the preceding year. No previous experience is required and all audition materials will be taught by Screamin’ Eagle staff during the tryout sessions in May.
